Last week I shared a classic therapeutic process combined with self-hypnosis using a fist clenching technique combined with self-hypnosis to eliminate anger that was currently being experienced within oneself.

I got such a wonderful response from that process and also a great deal of questions. One of the things that came up out of many of the ensuing discussions was making a difference between anger being experienced in the here and now and what is often referred to an ‘latent’ anger which sits below our awareness to a degree and influences and affects us more subtly than the obvious outward outbursts of red-mist anger.

Several people asked me about a good technique for dealing with this latent type of anger and though my advice is always that such an issue warrants much more depth with a qualified professional to deal with properly, there are a number of things an individual can do to deal with it. One such very simple self-hypnosis process I am sharing with you here today.

Television sets and screens of varying natures have been used for many decades and continue to be a frequently used metaphoric tool within the world of therapy, personal development and self-improvement these days and they are an inherent part of the lives of many of us in the Western world and most people respond to them and understand them. We are going to use a television as a metaphor to help us within this self-hypnosis technique.

This process does involve imagining some lightly flashing and flickering types of imagery, and if you have a condition or disposition that is unsuited or if you are usually recommended to avoid flashing lights for any reason, then I also advise that you do not use this technique.

7 Steps To Overcome Latent Anger:

Step One: Get yourself into a comfortable position and one whereby you are going to be undisturbed for the duration of this exercise. make sure your feet are flat on the floor and place your dominant hand in your lap with your palm facing upwards.

Then in that position, Induce Hypnosis.
You can do so by any means you desire or know of. You can use the process in my Science of self-hypnosis book, use the free audio we give away on this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Heavy Arm Self-Hypnosis Induction Method
Using Eye Fixation for Self-Hypnosis
The Chiasson Self-Hypnosis Method
Hand to Face Self-Hypnosis Induction
Using Magnetic Hands for Self-Hypnosis
The Coin Drop Self-Hypnosis Induction

However, with this process, an induction is potentially too much activity, so I teach my clients how to adopt a hypnotic mindset and simply have a mindset that is positive and expectant. Again, to really understand the cognitive set of the hypnotic mindset, go grab a copy of my Science of self-hypnosis book where it is explained in simple but comprehensive terms.

Once you have induced hypnosis, or just adopted the hypnotic mindset, move on to the next step.

Step Two: Engage your imagination, trusting that however you imagine these things is the way which is right for you.

Imagine, design and create in your mind the perfect chair for you. Let it be a chair that supports you in all the right places, maybe you can even imagine that the chair moulds and melds itself to the exact contours of your body. Imagine it to be the colour you choose, made with the materials you prefer and really design the perfect chair for yourself right now.

As you sit and relax in the chair, tell yourself that you are drifting deeper inside your mind too. Then when you are really comfortable and have drifted deeply yet still retaining your sense of alertness, proceed to step three.

Step Three: Sat in the beautifully comfortable chair,  imagine looking at and actively watching a screen. This can be a television screen or the kind you get at a cinema, or any type of screen that you prefer to watch and feel most comfortable watching.

As you look at it and engage with the screen, really allowing all your focus to be on the screen, start to imagine and notice a light and image of some sort very quickly flashing and flickering on the screen. In fact, it is flickering so quickly and so fast, that you are unable to make out what the image actually is. Engage and watch for a few moments and let yourself get totally absorbed and drifting deeper inside your mind. Once you have watched this flickering of an image for a short while, then proceed to step four.

Step Four: Imagine that a red coloured flashing light appears on the screen and continues to flash as you focus upon it. it is a strong bright red colour and you really engage on the red flashes as they come on and off the screen.

You may or may not overtly realise or think about what this red represents, but just focus on it, how it makes you feel and think as you watch the red flashing light for a few moments.

The flashing is fast and at times seems to be erratic. notice how the red colour makes you feel, imagine the flashes are almost spikey and as soon as you notice yourself reacting to the red flashes in a tangible way, move on to the next step.

Step Five: Then using your imagination, use your focus and change the red light to blue, a soft and gentle blue colour. Let that blue dominate and supplant all trace of the previous red light. Let the flashing become slower and more rhythmic and focus on the blue.
Start to notice how the blue makes you feel. Imagine that the blue colour soothes you and relaxes you and the flashes become slower and the blue colour stays on the screen for longer periods of time with each flash. Imagine the blue starts to dominate your mind and become aware of letting it relax and soothe you and slow things down to an easiness that you can enjoy and bask in.

Let the blue colour stay on the screen for a moment or two and just enjoy it and notice how calm and centred you feel. Upon really noticing that, allow your breathing to be gentler and comfortable and move on to the next step.

Step Six: Start to add things to the screen now… Images that you associate with clamness and love – people places, things… Add sounds you associate with calmness and love… Imagine that as you look at those images and hear those sounds, the feelings of calmness and love grow deep within you and settle you further and spend as much time as you need to truly feel at one with a peacefulness and sense of comfort.

Tell yourself that in life, red flashes turn into blue with consideration and thought and love at the times when it suits you best for that to happen.

Step Seven: Wiggle your toes and fingers, open your eyes, exit hypnosis and go about your day. Remember to take some action that is going to be proof that you benefited and changed as a result of what you did in this self-hypnosis session.

Enjoy this process, the more you practice it, the more unwanted and unnecessary anger starts to move in to good feelings naturally. of course there’ll be times when it is ok to have some anger and frustration, but more of any latent lingering anger begins to dispel and turn into considered relaxation and calmness.

Have a fabulous day.
