Today I end this short series of articles about boosting the immune system sung self-hypnosis. Do refer to the previous two blog entries here on my hypnosis blog as today’s session is a bit more fanciful and is best preceded with the knowledge of the previous two entries here.

Last weekend was the first weekend I had off following the end of the academic year for my hypnotherapy training school. I put a lot of energy into my training courses and as a result feel a bit jaded by the end of the academic year, so I like to make sure I am fully revitalised and rested ready for the start of the next one.  I spent some wonderful time with my wife and children at our beach hut, playing on the beach, in the sea, building castles, digging holes and eating ice creams. I got to go out running and we even had dinner out with friends and had a very relaxing enjoyable weekend. It was really when I got back into the office that I had time to reflect properly on the end of academic year events.

The end of year party was great fun, the weekend module was great fun, I loved handing out the certificates of those who qualified and wishing everyone well with their journey’s onwards in this field. The laughter was not just apparent this weekend, it was there throughout the course. I take my subject and my work incredibly seriously, but I do not think I could do it if it were not fun. I also think laughter makes for a stimulating learning environment, And boy did we have some laughter on this year’s course. Much of it you can see if you have access to the video footage in our Platinum members area.

Many say that this kind of utter laughter is incredibly good for the immune system… So I make a habit of that kind of laughter as often as I can… There are schools of thought that believe those who have little laughter and joy in their lives are the ones whose immune systems let them down in a variety of ways… Whether it is getting colds more often or even something more serious.

I have written often about my love for all things fantastical… My favourite books are fantasy novels, my favourite films are fantasy and sci-fi… I think it may be this that resulted in me fancying myself as a white knight riding in to save the day when I first qualified as a hypnotherapist over 15 years ago.

I still love the images conjured up in my mind though… The knight riding in. I have always loved being in Winchester, you go to see the stunning Cathedral and of course go to see King Arthurs table where he and his gallant knights would treat each other as equals and do chivalrous deeds…  They are the ultimate defeater of evil in my book… They stand for so much that I associate with strength, courage, well-being and for some reason… Health!

I mean, you’d never expect to see a white Knight behaving in a half-hearted, morose manner with a cough and runny nose, would you?

It is with that in mind that this final self-hypnosis session addressing immune functioning is designed…

I am going to be predictable now (those of you that have been in my classrooms or that read this blog regularly will be aware that I refer to this show a LOT)… In an episode of Red Dwarf once… The team visit a ‘psi-moon’ – this is a place where Rimmer had landed and the planet took on the features of his psyche… Being a troubled individual, the planet had a monster that was Rimmer’s self-loathing, it had the pit of despair, a grave yard filled with graves where his self-esteem, kindness, bravery and courage were all buried.

In the real world, when he was feeling bad about himself, the planet became more entrenched in misery, but when the crew told Rimmer how much they loved him, Knights started raising up from the graveyard to slay the baddies; “take that, fear” they would say as they swiped them with swords… I loved it… The knights, almost like musketeers in their manner, were destroying all that was bad in Rimmer’s mind… A very useful metaphor for me today.

So, with regards to boosting immune functioning, there is much we can do in very general terms in addition to self-hyposis. We can look at how we actually care for ourselves, we can look at dismantling stress, we can look at developing our health by examining our diet and exercise regime – all stuff that is not really my own professional sphere of competence. As I said earlier this week here, self-hypnosis has evidence to suggest it can be a great help too.

Here is another active mental imagery process to use in conjunction with self-hypnosis. It is totally prescriptive, but of course, if you understand the rationale underpinning it, you can adapt it to suit your own preferences, or just revert back to yesterday’s technique which is more open to your own interpretation:

Step One:

In a comfortable place where you are undisturbed, sat in an upright, attentive posture with your arms and legs uncrossed.

Induce hypnosis. You can do so by any means you desire or know of. You can use the process in my Science of self-hypnosis book, use the free audio we give away on this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Heavy Arm Self-Hypnosis Induction Method
Using Eye Fixation for Self-Hypnosis
The Chiasson Self-Hypnosis Method
Hand to Face Self-Hypnosis Induction
Using Magnetic Hands for Self-Hypnosis
The Coin Drop Self-Hypnosis Induction

However, with this process, an induction is potentially too much activity, so I teach my clients how to adopt a hypnotic mindset and simply have a mindset that is positive and expectant. Again, to really understand the cognitive set of the hypnotic mindset, go grab a copy of my Science of self-hypnosis book where it is explained in simple but comprehensive terms.

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two.

Step Two:

Imagine yourself in a beautiful environment in nature. It could be beside the sea, in a forest, in a meadow, or wherever you prefer. Tune into the details, the colours, the sounds, the temperature and make it as vivid as possible. Enjoy the tranquility of the place, tune into yourself and tell yourself that each sight, sound and feeling takes you deeper into hypnosis.

Take all the time necessary to enjoy this place in nature of your own creation or perhaps somewhere you have been to and are remembering (and please take enough time to really get this vivid in your mind)… When it is vivid and you feel notably comfortable, then move on to the next step.

Step Three:

Reach up your hand with the palm facing to the sky. As you raise it upwards, imagine that you connect with a ray of golden sunshine that begins to take on a shape. As you watch you see a small medieval knight on a white horse…. (I often cheer, whoop and shout ‘charge!’ at this stage, that is just me and a little premature for what is coming up…)

Watch as he takes shape though… Craft and form his image in whatever is most appealing to you … Does not have to be male, you could have a ‘Joan of Ark’ type female rider, for example – basically, use whatever appeals to you the most… Ok, with my version here today… See his armour glinting in the sun, notice the colours… Look at his face… See his wisdom… You just know that he is kind, yet strong. Feel the power coming from this tiny medieval knight… Imagine it emanating from him… Again, take all the time necessary to get this lodged in your mind and move on to the next step.

Step Four:

Now look at his left hand… He is holding a golden sword… Yay!!

Look at his right hand…. He is holding a golden wand…. Now watch as the knight rides into your body… As he rides through your body and points the golden wand, a golden light comes out of it… (Ok, I admit it, I like to imagine him doing the thing Gandalf does in the 3rd Lord of the Rings film…)

The light is healing and comforting and surrounds each cell it comes into contact with, protecting each one from harm and boosting it’s resilience… Now see the light destroying any bad cells, strengthening weak cells and improving the health as he charged through… Raaah!!

Ahem…

Continue to feel the golden light protecting and strengthening all your cells, each and every one… Feel the golden light soothing, healing each area… Watch as anything unwanted is being destroyed… Feel the light protecting you and enhancing your immune system… Now watch as the knight rides to your organs and brain…. See you body’s protective cells come out to greet him… See the golden light of his wand surround each one… They now have extra power and strength…. Watch as his sword cuts down any bad cells… Although, if you are not into your immune system waging war in this manner, do it in a way of your own choosing…  See how the cells fight and destroy any illness….

See and hear the knight go through your body calling to your blood cells… Calling useful, healthy, protective cells that are his allies that will help to fight and enhance your immune system more and more… If there are any weak spots, watch as the knight finds it and fights it with his allies…. Take as much time as is necessary to work through the entire body, then move on to the next step.

Step Five:

When the knight is done, watch the knight ride back to the palm of your hand the same way he went in… Imagine that you stand up again in nature.

You might like to thank the knight for helping you and then gently close your hand and pull it close to your heart, where he melts until needed again… . You know he is your own special knight who will protect you whenever you need him. Whenever you call on him he will be there. You can then repeat this process accordingly whenever you choose.

Step Six:

Spend some time relaxing and feeling rejuvenated and invigorated and believing firmly that you have boosted your immune system. Once you feel assured of this, you can move on to the final step to bring this session to an end.

Step Seven:

If you follow my own self-hypnosis protocol, then count yourself up and out of hypnosis from one through to five. Or you can simply take a few slightly deeper breaths, wiggle your fingers and toes and open your eyes to bring the session to an end. Be appreciative towards yourself, thank yourself for investing some time in your own well-being. Go about your day with a sense of knowing… Knowing that you are doing some good to your immune system.

As I said yesterday, use this (perhaps in conjunction with yesterday’s session) process daily and repeatedly for at least 4 weeks to see real results.

I’ll be back soon.
