In yesterday’s blog entry, Effects of self-hypnosis on immune functioning: The evidence (which I strongly advise you to read prior to engaging with this process here), I referred to numerous pieces of research and randomised controlled trials whereby self-hypnosis had been used to advance immune functioning. It is interesting to note that active mental imagery techniques outperformed relaxation themed, more passive imagery with regards to enhancing immune functioning.

Therefore, I wanted to offer up a technique that any self-hypnotist can use and apply to advance their immune functioning. It can be used in very general terms of course, though it can also be used at the onset of an illness to advance your response to dealing with it.

This process is going to involve you imagining an increase of lymphocytes in your bloodstream. Lymphocytes are white blood cells which are an important part of the immune system. They distinguish the body’s own cells from foreign ones and defend the body against infection by producing chemicals that destroy foreign material. These are T- and B-Cells, helper cells which multiply, create an army of identical cells that fight infection and also ‘remember’ the invader, helping to enhance your immunity to another attack in the future. You’ll also imagine an increase in NK cells in your blood. NK cells are Natural Killer cells and are an important part of the innate immune system and respond to virally infected cells.

The research did also show that the best results were gained by those who repeated the process daily for several weeks. I’d advise practicing daily for at least 4 weeks, preferably more if you wish to make great gains with your immune system in this way.

Get yourself into a comfortable position, sat upright in an attentive posture with your arms and legs uncrossed, in a place where you’ll be undisturbed for the duration of this session, then proceed onto the first step.

Step One:

Induce hypnosis. You can do so by any means you desire or know of. You can use the process in my Science of self-hypnosis book, use the free audio we give away on this website to practice or have a look at the following articles as and when you need them; they are basic processes to help you simply open the door of your mind:

Heavy Arm Self-Hypnosis Induction Method
Using Eye Fixation for Self-Hypnosis
The Chiasson Self-Hypnosis Method
Hand to Face Self-Hypnosis Induction
Using Magnetic Hands for Self-Hypnosis
The Coin Drop Self-Hypnosis Induction

However, with this process, an induction is potentially too much activity, so I teach my clients how to adopt a hypnotic mindset and simply have a mindset that is positive and expectant. Again, to really understand the cognitive set of the hypnotic mindset, go grab a copy of my Science of self-hypnosis book where it is explained in simple but comprehensive terms.

Once you have induced hypnosis, move on to step two.

Step Two:

Spend some time tuning into your breathing. Do not alter it or affect it, just observe it and let it happen all by itself. Tell yourself that each breath takes you deeper into hypnosis. If you lose track of your breathing, that’s OK, just return your awareness to your breathing.

Let your breath guide your awareness deeper into your body. Watch your body without interfering with it. Tune into rhythm of body, the beating of the heart, and the pulse. Sense it, watch it and enjoy it. Sense and tune into the blood pumping through your body. Tell yourself that all these thoughts and feelings, all this mindful awareness of your system takes you deeper into hypnosis.

Spend enough time diligently going through this step, then move on to the next step.

Step Three:

Imagine that there is an increase in lymphocytes, NK cells and white blood cells in your bloodstream. Imagine them multiplying and expanding their presence within your system. Do this first of all by telling yourself that this is happening, using your internal dialogue and being assured of it, convince yourself that it is the truth.

Then start to imagine it is happening; you might imagine a sensation building within you, you might imagine it visually occurring, or you might imagine it has a sound that is amplified as the  lymphocytes, NK cells and white blood cells in your bloodstream increase in numbers.

Once you have firmly believed that is occurring, move on to the next step.

Step Four:

With the increased levels of lymphocytes, NK cells and white blood cells in your bloodstream, now they take action. Imagine that any foreign material in your body is being eaten up. Imagine germs being eaten up. Imagine any unwanted virus remnants being eaten up.

You can imagine this in numerous ways;

a) Colours: You might imagine foreign materials, germs and anything unwanted is one colour and the helper cells are another colour and as they spread through the body, they change or neutralise the colours as they meet.

b) Imagery such as sharks or warriors in the blood (representing the helper cells) swimming through the body, consuming everything unwanted. Heck, I even imagined having pac man in my bloodstream once! Or use imagery similar to the above picture of the good cells consuming the unwanted cells.

c) You might imagine that all the helper cells have certain sounds resonating throughout the body that neutralise everything that is unwanted.

d) You can also imagine that the helper cells have feelings, sensations, or a vibration of some kind that moves through you neutralising and destroying anything unwanted. It might have an electrical charge, for example, that pulses and dispels everything unwanted.

Take a good period of time to do this thoroughly and diligently. Sweep through the entire body. Once you have done that, move on to the next step.

Step Five:

With that done, spend some time just relaxing now and imagine a sense of well-being spreading through the body. Reassure yourself that you feel healthier, fitter, more vibrant and more immune. Be gentle, assured and convince yourself of the good you have just done. Imagine yourself in a variety of aspects of your life being fit and well, looking good and feeling great.

Once you’ve spent enough time doing that, you can move on to the next step ready to bring the session to an end.

Step Six:

Exit hypnosis. if you follow the protocol from my book, count yourself out from one to five. Otherwise, you can wiggle your fingers and toes, take some deeper breaths and open your eyes, reorient yourself and feel good.

Practice this regularly and you’ll benefit greatly. I’ll be back with more soon.
