Sigh - I remember some time ago submitting feedback to the NHS site re. hypnotherapy. It may come as no surprise that I had no reply.

Interesting to read the stuff re. ibs as i am researching this for an article for the PHN. The NICE guidelines are 'damning with faint praise'but and although good to see Helen Bremner in the Royal College of Nursing journal, the nHS pulled the plug on the work she was doing.

Pah! I say.

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis and therapy to bring about lasting changes within the client. Hypnosis itself is a useful tool for finding the root cause of the problem and when this has been ascertained, attention would then shift to solution based therapy to empower the client to make the necessary changes. Hypnotherapy requires the participation of the client and is sometimes misunderstood as being a "quick fix". Health problems should always be checked out and diagnosed by your GP before consulting a hypnotherapist, and in some cases, the doctors permission would be required before making an appointment.

This was a great read. Finding this NHS page this morning really got my back up. Made me want to climb onto my roof and shout at them. It was only my small fear of heights that stopped me.

I think the issue might be that they are referring to hypnosis as a form of 'therapy' in itself as opposed to what it actually is - a vehicle through which to deliver therapeutic interventions. The treatment of insomnia is a good example. Although there may be little evidence to support the use of hypnotherapy per se in insomnia, there is a growing field research showing the CBT is effective (Alladin, 2008). So then, as you say Adam, the fact that hypnosis is shown to further CBT interventions is a point totally missed by the NHS website. Because if they recognised this then clearly CBH would be highlighted as a clinically supported treatment!!
