I personally think, as mentioned it was a load of sensationalized drama a few choice words by the shop keeper... I felt I was in a trance... boom, its Hypnosis... a clear few deluded folk out there set out to tarnish a very reputable and safe technique.

If only they knew

It would be interesting to have some knowledge of the shopkeeper's history relating to thieves, was he alone in the shop, afraid, what is his specific state of mind regarding these kinds of events, has he been robbed before and was he just reproducing a learned behaviour...in case of doubt, freeze, this guy might have a gun...

In retrospect, and in the public eye, like it is sometimes the case with hypnosis shows, it is always easy to blame it on hypnosis...by the way, the "I wasn't myself, darling, I was hypnotised..." is always a great line when caught red handed with the neigbour's wife...

The problem, of course, lies in the way hypnosis is presented again and again by the media, having to explain to clients over and over that hypnosis is something THEY do sometimes feel like a losing battle.

Watching talented street hypnotists/pickpockets like James Brown makes you realise how easily our minds can be fooled by focused attention or distraction. Unfortunately this also leads to the mixing of genres, hypnosis being always portrayed in tandem with magic does not help the cause of hypnotherapy.

Mind you, I even seem to remember one of our respected peers bragging about how his hypnotic methods could allow him to steal money from a cash register in plain sight...if this kind of act is seen as an hypnosis litmus test, we should perhaps not be surprised to see it on the first page of the newspapers...
