Well said, Adam……… in my experience (if you are brave enough) you can disarm idiots and really rude people by responding immediately with an over the top nice response.

It really does disarm them, as they are so surprised and stunned they shut up and spend the next few moments wondering if you are foreign and didnt understand, or you are off your head and they should run away ….quickly.

Ps…..if ever I am roared at (or signed at) for making an inadvertant car manoeuver………. I wave, smile really genuinely, and mouth ‘thank you’ as I sail past ……….. I could write a book on the phased and puzzled expressions I have seen.

It’s amazing as well how we can forget that rudeness and bullying is bad behaviour sometimes. In a hospital job I did years ago, it was usual to be shouted at in theatre and for my bosses to go off in rants. I moved to another hospital with different consultants who were absolutely lovely and genuinely did not know how to react when one of them thanked me for my help one day. I’d become almost immune to being yelled at…but was struck dumb when I was treated well again! I was lucky to work with some great people over the past few years. It was strange to move jobs again last summer though and have someone describe me as a “breath of fresh air” in the department. Apparently my approach of asking nicely, saying please and thank you and just liking to have a pleasant working environment was novel. It’s amazing how much people appreciate just basic social niceties and sad how much erosion of them there has been. Please and thank you cost nothing as my mum used to say!

I completely agree, Adam. Common courtesy seems to have become an increasingly rarified commodity. Like you, I often wonder to what extent society IS being adversely influenced (programmed) by inappropriate ok-to-be-an-arsehole images/suggestions received via the media. And your remedy suggestions are spot-on. Another brilliant article – thank you.
