I applaud your research in the field, as it will undoubtedly cast some light on cognitive perception. I can see this resulting in new methods of enhanced study techniques using self hypnosis as a means to open the channels to bi-hemispheric learning. I look forward to seeing the results of your work.

I was just reading about this effect about the strooop effect and it's ability to further give scientific credibility to hypnosis in Melissa Tiers & Shawn Carson's book, 'Keeping the brain in mind'. I believe this is very valuable research for the professions. I look forward to you self-hypnosis finding Adam. Thanks

Thanks Linda... Ah yes.... What a discussion we could have about volition and non-volition.... I suspect we'd need many days....

Best wishes to you, Adam.

My area of research is 'The Rubber Hand Illusion" utilising hypnotic suggestions of the rubber hand being stroked and producing the same effect body ownership and self-awareness.
Many hypnotic responses appear to involve executive functions, especially the Stroop effect. They are produced by unconscious intentions and are experienced as involuntary because of inaccurate HOTs (higher order thoughts) of intending. (Rosenthal 2005)
According to Cold Control Theory (Dienes and Perner, 2007), hypnotic response is the intending to perform a motor or cognitive action whilst remaining unaware of the intentions. In this context it would appear that hypnosis is a purely metacognitive phenomenon. A person creates altered experiences of volition or reality in accordance with situational requirements. (Nash & Barber 2008)

Thanks Richard, I agree that it is great to spend time really examining hypnosis per sé on occasion.

As far as I can tell, the Stroop effect can be inhibited by practice, that is the reason that Stroop research is done in a very particular manner and has a number of random variations for testing - I do not have the desire and you would not have the will to live if I explained it more than that. However, there have been other means of at least partially inhibiting the Stroop effect. I am not sure whether studies have been done using suggestion alone, without the precursor of an induction, so I;d lean toward saying that your final sentence is looking favourable currently.

Best wishes to you, Adam.

I really enjoyed this and as I mentioned on FB, it's refreshing to be directed back to the hypnosis side of hypnotherapy rather than getting too lost in the interventions with the induction (for example) just being a ritual doorway into the intervention. I wonder if negation of the stroop effect is one of the (few) things that can be achieved in hypnosis rather than not in hypnosis?
