Today I’m writing about building momentum. When you develop a business, or are training for a sports event, or are taking on a project of any kind, often it gets successfully completed as a result of the momentum you build. Whenever I trained for a marathon or an ultra marathon, the momentum of the training and the previous events I had competed in would often nudge me into the right direction and certainly would help carry me across the line on occasion!

Likewise, when I’ve been studying for a qualification, or writing a book, you sometimes feel like it is a grind to get the ball rolling. Perhaps I’d get into the office on a particular morning and not really feel very driven for whatever reason, but then I’d start taking the steps needed to build up some momentum and that momentum would carry the project much further than I may have thought earlier that day.

Have you ever thought about what it would mean to have the power of momentum in a variety of aspects of your life? Your business or career would surely soar, relationships would thrive, your health goals would be met and maintained and you’d prosper in other areas of your life because momentum would be helping you achieve every goal you have in life.

You may have once had incredible excitement and enthusiasm about a goal in your life only to have it shot down in mid-air. What happened? Why couldn’t you accomplish what your mind wanted so much to complete?
If this has happened to you, you should ask yourself a number of questions about your attitude and abilities before you attempt to meet the next challenge. I’m quoting Tony Robbins again on my blog (that’s like, twice this year!) Tony Robbins says:

“The most important thing you can do to achieve your goals is to make sure that as soon as you set them, you immediately begin to create momentum.”

Did you immediately begin to create momentum when you decided on a goal in your life – or did you procrastinate, lose confidence, and become intimidated by the challenge or not pursue it rigorously for any other reason? Unless momentum has begun and kept moving along, resistance can set in and destroy the headway you’ve made. When you gather enough momentum, you simply ride the distractions, the bumps in the road and you carry onwards to the successful completion of your goal.

Momentum can be useful in your life if you understand it’s value and power. Creating momentum at just the right times in your life can propel you on to the success you have always dreamed of. It can become an unstoppable force in your life and help you create some positive changes in your lifestyle should you require them.

A snowball can turn into an avalanche if it gathers enough force along the way. An avalanche is a might force of nature and we want to harness a similar sort of power in our lives. Imagine how your life would be if the same force was propelling your mental and physical actions! That is impactful momentum.

The sheer force of the momentum you create also means that you’ll turn into a fast-moving machine. Here in the UK, the TV show X-Factor each year demonstrates very overtly the power of momentum as a contestant goes from auditions, to judge’s houses, to the live shows, to pop music star and has a number one record that virtually always claims the Christmas number one spot!

There is positive momentum and negative momentum. Are you creating positive momentum in your life, drawing the things you want in your life, or are you pushing it away? Here are ten reminders to help you maintain focus on what really matters and build momentum that will create a force for good in your life:

1.  Know what you actually want:
Success is seeing what you want and taking decisive action towards your vision. What do you actually want for yourself? WHat will your momentum achieve or accomplish? What is important to you? What is your passion? More importantly, who will you become as a result of you achieving your goals? How will your achievement contribute to others and make an impact?

“You want to set a goal that is big enough that in the process of achieving it you become someone worth becoming.”
– Jim Rohn, Success Coach and author.

Ideally, get a sense of purpose, with a sense of purpose your life is more meaningful, and you’ll also find it a lot easier to build momentum in your life if it is fueled with a foundation of purpose. 2.  Use visual reminders of your goals:
Maybe have pictures that illustrate what you want in your life, or that remind you of your goals. You might like to create a vision board related to your goals. Put them on a poster board and place it where you can see them on a regular basis, like your bathroom mirror, in your wallet, in your office, next to your computer. Or even have it displayed on your computer screen itself, maybe as your background picture of as your screensaver. Surround yourself with visual stimulus that will stimulate and inspire you all day every day and will add to the momentum you build.

“When the dream is big enough, the odds don’t matter.”
– Les Brown

3.  Set clear and specific goals with realistic timelines:
According to a study conducted by Gail Matthews at Dominican University, those who write down their goals accomplish significantly more than those who don’t write down their goals. Write down the goal on a checklist, how you will know when you achieve it, and the date you will achieve it. You could also have the goals written down on an app such an Evernote that you review and refer to regularly to keep yourself goal focused. With goal focus comes momentum.

“The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”
– Michelangelo

4.  Create a To-Do List to use your time wisely:
Make a daily to-do list in the evening for the next day to keep you on track with your goals. Not a general to-do list like you make when you go to the grocery store, but a defined to do list. Example: Meditation 5am – 5:15am; Workout 6:15 – 7:15 etc. The reason is you don’t want to spend a lot of time on one specific thing and at the end of the day, nothing was accomplished.

5. Take action:
Momentum requires action to be taken. When an opportunity presents itself that corresponds with your goals, don’t hesitate, and take action. Many times we overwhelm ourselves by looking at the overall goal, instead of taking it one step at a time. To get the avalanche started, you need to pack the snowball in your hands and start rolling it down the hill. Take action to get momentum underway.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.”
– Martin Luther King Jr.

A great article to really help with this is here: How To Be Incredibly Productive: 10 Keys to Productivity.

6.  Celebrate the small successes:
Get into the habit of celebrating the small successes during your journey toward achieving your goals. The problem with not doing this is we end up diminishing our motivation and motivation is what keeps us on the right path and gives us the strength to soldier on to the top of the mountain. Understand that each small accomplishment brings you closer towards your goals.

This is particularly pertinent to building momentum. Celebrate milestones of progress along the way and make the successful outcome inevitable!

7.  Fill your mind with inspiration:
Read books about your craft, listen to audio programs, and watch videos that educate, uplift, and inspire you. Read and learn about people who have done what you want to do. Regularly become inspired, learn new things and build internal momentum.

“You will be the same person in five years as you are now, except for the people you meet and the books you read.”
– Charlie “Tremendous” Jones

8.  Find a Mentor:
Find someone that would add input, support advice, feedback, and accountability to help you maintain your focus on your goals, but more importantly has blazed the trail that you’re currently on to help minimize your mistakes toward achievement. A mentor will be like a renewable momentum source.

You might also consider a coach of some kind, which I think is worth it’s weight in gold, as I explain in this article: 6 Reasons Why You Need A Life Coach.

9.  Consistently review your goals:
Related to some of the points I mentioned already. Review your goals weekly and assess your progress. This will add fuel to your fire and help you maintain your focus on what matters. It will also help you create new ideas and recognise opportunities that will assist you towards achieving your goals. Being aware of your progress will boost momentum.

10.  Believe in yourself:
Momentum will occur when underpinned with belief. Many times people don’t set goals because they don’t believe in themselves, they are scared of failure, and what other people may think of them when they fail. Most people fail, not because they lack the skills, training or aptitude to reach their goals, they simply don’t believe they can achieve it. Whatever your vision is, you can achieve it, but it starts with believing in yourself.

Here are two articles that will really help you with self-belief:

When you take action and stay focused on what really matters, you create positive momentum… and momentum creates action that brings results. Become a force to be reckoned with!
